Important: Unlike all conventional pottery, authentic Jaipur Blue Pottery contains absolutely no clay (mitti) — it is made entirely from mineral powders and natural binders.
The 8-Step Making Process
Every piece is entirely handcrafted — a tradition perfected over centuries by Jaipur artisans.
01
Raw Materials
The Unique Raw Materials
Five special minerals are sourced — quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Fuller’s Earth, Katira Gum, and Sodium Bicarbonate. No clay, ever.
02
Shaping
Dough Preparation & Moulding
All ingredients are blended into a pliable dough, rolled flat, pressed into moulds, and left to dry naturally under direct sunlight.
03
Surface Prep
Smoothing & Cleaning
Once sun-dried, each piece is removed from its mould and hand-sanded with sandpaper until the surface is perfectly smooth and white.
04
Base Coat
Engobing
A white slip of quartz and glass powder is applied as a base coat, giving Blue Pottery its bright whiteness and the smooth surface that makes colours vivid.
05
The Soul : Most important step
Hand Painting
Artisans use squirrel-hair brushes to trace outlines in Cobalt Oxide blue, then fill with turquoise, green, and other mineral colours — all entirely by hand.
06
Glazing
Glazing — Secret of the Shine
A fine powder of glass, borax, and red lead is dusted over the painted surface. This invisible coat transforms entirely in the kiln into a brilliant glassy shine.
07
Firing
Firing in the Kiln
Pieces are fired at 800–850°C for 4–5 hours in a sealed kiln, then cooled very slowly — too fast and the piece cracks. Patience is everything here.
08
Final Step
Quality Inspection
Every single piece is inspected by hand after firing. Only flawless pieces — free of cracks, colour faults, or surface defects — are selected for the customer.
